README

# openclaw-plugin-gh-auto-install

OpenClaw plugin that automatically installs GitHub CLI (`gh`) on gateway startup using the system package manager (apt). This ensures `gh` is available system-wide and persists across container restarts.

## Features

- ✅ Automatically installs `gh` on gateway startup
- ✅ Uses system package manager (apt) for proper system-wide installation
- ✅ Persists across container restarts (installed to `/usr/bin/gh`)
- ✅ Falls back to GitHub releases if apt fails
- ✅ Supports both arm64 and amd64 architectures
- ✅ Zero configuration required

## Installation

### Via OpenClaw Plugin System (Recommended)

1. In OpenClaw Control UI, go to **Plugins** → **Install**
2. Search for `openclaw-plugin-gh-auto-install`
3. Click **Install**

### Manual Installation

```bash
# Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/toclawbot/openclaw-plugin-gh-auto-install.git
# Install as OpenClaw plugin
cd openclaw-plugin-gh-auto-install
npm install
# Add to openclaw.json plugins.entries
{
  "plugins": {
    "entries": {
      "gh-auto-install": {
        "enabled": true,
        "config": {}
      }
    }
  }
}
```

## How It Works

1. On gateway startup, the plugin checks if `gh` is available in PATH
2. If not found, it runs `apt-get update && apt-get install -y gh`
3. Falls back to downloading from GitHub releases if apt fails
4. Installs to system paths (`/usr/bin/gh` or `/usr/local/bin/gh`)
5. Logs installation status to OpenClaw logger

## Requirements

- OpenClaw gateway running on Debian/Ubuntu-based system
- Root/sudo privileges for package installation (gateway typically runs as root in container)
