# Mandate

Mandate adds a reason-aware control layer to existing agent wallets. Evaluate **why** an agent wants to pay, then approve, block, or escalate before signing. Stop risky payments before funds move, and keep a complete audit trail for operations, security, and compliance.

## Getting started
### OpenClaw (recommended)

The plugin registers tools (`mandate_register`, `mandate_validate`, `mandate_status`) and a safety-net hook that intercepts financial tool calls automatically. After install, the agent self-registers and starts validating. Mandate needs hooks to reliably catch payment intents, so the plugin is the preferred integration.

> **Note:** Without hooks, Mandate relies on the agent voluntarily calling `/validate` before every transaction. The SKILL.md instructs agents to do this, but there is no enforcement. For reliable interception, use the OpenClaw plugin or Claude Code plugin which provide hook-based gating.
## MANDATE.md: intent-aware payment decisions
You don't configure Mandate. You **write a mandate**: a plain-language document that defines transaction decisioning for your agent wallet. Every transaction is evaluated before a single wei moves.

### Self-improving rules
Every time you approve or reject a transaction, Mandate observes the pattern. After your first decision, the system suggests policy improvements:
- **Approve a transfer?** "Add this address to your allowlist."
- **Reject vague reasoning?** "Add rule: block transactions with reasons under 20 characters."
- **Approve above threshold repeatedly?** "Raise your approval threshold to $200."
Suggestions appear as cards in the dashboard and as inline buttons in Telegram. Accept with one tap: Mandate writes the rule into your MANDATE.md or updates the policy field. Dismiss, and it never resurfaces. Your policy evolves from your decisions, not from manual editing.

## The `reason` field
AI agents already think before every action. The `reason` field captures that thinking and turns it into the most powerful security signal in crypto.
**Here's why it matters. Watch this:**

The agent reads the counter-evidence, understands WHY it was tricked, and stops. No retry. No workaround. Mandate doesn't just block. It **convinces** the agent to cancel.
Session keys are on-chain. They see `{to, value, calldata}`. Mandate sees the reasoning: the attack surface nobody else is watching.
## Session keys vs Mandate
Session keys enforce on-chain constraints: amount, address, time.
Mandate adds intent awareness. It evaluates WHY your agent wants to spend, validates that reasoning against on-chain context, and learns what "normal" looks like for your agent.
We don't replace your session keys. We make them decision-aware.

## Private reasoning, zero retention
Financial data is sensitive. Your rules, who gets paid, how much, why, and what contracts get called can be used to copy your trading advantage or train next big GPT.
Mandate routes its LLM judge through [Venice.ai](https://venice.ai), a privacy-first inference provider with **zero data retention**. By default, we rely on **GLM-5**, so your agent's financial reasoning never gets stored, logged, or used for training.
